Sweater Weather Is Here! Is Your Home Ready for Winter?
A Fall Home Maintenance Checklist for Arkansas River Valley Homeowners
By Tonya Moles | Your Arkansas Home Team
Fall brings beautiful colors, cooler evenings, and a good excuse to pull out your favorite sweatshirt. It’s also the perfect time to give your home a little attention before winter arrives.
Whether you’re settling in for years to come or thinking about selling, seasonal maintenance helps protect the place you call home. Here’s where I recommend starting.
1. Give Your Gutters Some Attention
Those colorful leaves look much better on the trees than packed into your gutters! Clear leaves and debris from gutters and downspouts, and check that water drains away from your foundation.
Look for sagging sections, loose connections, or water pooling beside the house. If the job requires climbing or reaching, consider hiring a professional.
2. Make Sure Your Heat Is Ready
Schedule a heating system check before you need it every day. Check your air filter and clean or replace it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Keep furniture and rugs from blocking vents.
A little attention now can help your system operate efficiently when temperatures drop.
3. Keep the Cold Air Outside
Feel a draft around a window or exterior door? Check for worn weatherstripping, gaps, and damaged door sweeps. Use appropriate caulk around stationary gaps and weatherstripping around moving parts.
These small improvements can make your home more comfortable and help reduce wasted heating energy.
4. Protect Outdoor Faucets and Exposed Pipes
Before freezing weather arrives:
-
Disconnect, drain, and store garden hoses.
-
Protect outdoor faucets with properly fitted insulated covers.
-
Insulate vulnerable pipes in unheated spaces.
-
Have irrigation systems winterized as needed.
-
Locate your main water shutoff so you can act quickly if a pipe breaks.
Faucet covers are one part of winter preparation; exposed plumbing may need additional protection. During severe cold, follow your water utility’s guidance for your home.
5. Look Over Your Roof and Trees
From the ground, look for missing shingles, visible damage, or branches hanging over the roof. Check ceilings for water stains and have suspected leaks evaluated.
Arrange for a professional to handle roof repairs or potentially dangerous limbs before winter weather makes the work more difficult.
6. Get Your Fireplace Ready for Cozy Evenings
Before lighting that first fire, have your chimney or flue inspected and cleaned if needed. A fireplace that looks ready may still need attention inside.
If you use a wood stove, include it in your seasonal inspection and follow its operating instructions.
7. Check Your Winter Essentials
Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms according to their instructions, and check their replacement dates. Gather flashlights, batteries, blankets, drinking water, and needed medications somewhere easy to reach.
If you use a portable generator during an outage, operate it outdoors, at least 20 feet from doors, windows, and vents—never in a garage.
8. Tidy Up Outdoor Living Areas
Store or cover patio furniture, clean and put away garden tools, and clear leaves from steps and walkways. Check outdoor lighting so entrances are easier to navigate as the days get shorter.
While you’re outside, make a list of little repairs you’ve been putting off. You don’t have to tackle everything in one weekend!
A Little Maintenance Now Goes a Long Way
